LARGS  AND MILLPORT INFORMATION BUREAU – April 2008

Unfortunately, we had very late notice that the Bureau would be closed for repairs towards the end of March, so I was unable to let you know in the February newsletter, but we hope to be open soon after Easter and looking better than ever. Keep watching out for our reopening when the new summer hours will be from 10am to 4pm every day.

Another unfortunate occurrence was the postponement of the Largs Fairtrade Cheese and Wine event on Saturday 15 March. Owing to a distinct lack of interest (or advertising?) it will have to be rescheduled to a later date. If you want to become involved in Fairtrade activities in Largs,, there will be a meeting at Moorburn Chambers at 7.30pm on 15 April. The Annual General Meeting will be on 13 May at the same time and place.

Dust off your trainers, for the Largs 10K Fun Run will be held on Sunday 11 May, starting at 10am from Barrfields. You can register for the run, costing £10, from 9am on that day.

Many people will be saddened to hear that the Largs Jazz Festival will not be taking place this year. Hopefully, there will be enough funds to provide one in 2009.

Looking ahead to the early autumn, thirty-one French people from our intended twin town of Andernos-les-Bains will be arriving in Largs. They are dependent upon the kindness of local people offering bed and breakfast accommodation for four nights on 4,5,6,and 7 Sept. If you are willing to do this, call Ken on 672623.

If you and your dog are looking for some training, Inverclyde Dog Training Club is commencing classes for six weeks at St Columba’s Church Hall from Thursday, 3 April. If you’d like to book, call Myra on 711314. Having experienced these classes personally, I can thoroughly recommend them. All the instructors are fully trained volunteers and, as well as running the classes, they are available for one to one consultation during the class if owners have problems with their dog’s behaviour.

The Bureau does, by the way, support the No Poo On My Shoe Campaign by stocking those pretty green bags which all dog owners need – and THEY’RE FREE! Once the Bureau is open again, come in and collect some.

I see that several people have joined me in denouncing the amount of litter defacing our lovely town. PLEASE put your rubbish in a bin or take it home. This is so obvious to those careful people who do this already, but it seems that the message isn’t percolating through to those who don’t care what their environment looks like. However, it would be nice to see the Council emptying bins and dog waste bins more frequently, to encourage us all.
